Under the Skin: Upclose Chat with Dr. R. Paul St. Amand

Thousands of Americans have been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in the past 5 years. Though 5-10 years ago many people thought of Fibromyalgia as a “Crazy Peoples” disease. Since than scientific evidence has proven otherwise. Due to a recent interview with Dr. Paul St. Amand of the Fibromyalgia Treatment Center and Author of “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia” I have a new view on Fibromyalgia.

Approximately 1 in 50 Americans have Fibromyalgia or will have it in their lifetime. Fibromyalgia is most commonly found in women however men have been diagnosed as well. Over the years many doctors thought of Fibromyalgia as a neurological condition. Many prescribed Anti-depressants and narcotics to calm the symptoms. This only masks the condition. Dr. St. Amand has adapted a new treatment that is showing incredible results.

It is called the Guaifensesin Protocol. This treatment was designed to treat the underlining core of the disease at the cellular level in an effort to heal the body. Dr. R. Paul St. Amand feels that the disease is causing our bodies to be ‘tired’ on a cellular level causing the other body systems to break down. The treatment is said to reverse this process. The doctor provides three possible parts to treatment. 1) Guaifensesin protocol 2) Stopping the use of salicylates in our food, hair & body products, dental products, etc…3) low carbohydrates diet for those suffering Hypoglycemia.

Currently Dr. R. Paul St. Amand’s Fibromyalgia Treatment Center has donated $300,000 dollars to the the research project “The City of Hope” project in Duarte California. You can read more on the progress of the project by going to www.fibromyalgiatreatment.com/board

Further into the interview:

Dr. R. Paul St. Amand expressed his opinions on the book “What Your Doctor Might Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia”

Question: What inspired you to write the book “What Your Doctor Might Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia?”

Dr. Amand Answered: He was approached by an editor and was asked to write the book. With the help of his assistant [ Claudia Marek] he was able to complete the book.

The book was revised 1 ½ years ago.

Question: Are you thinking of writing more books on Fibromyalgia?

Dr. Amand Answered: “No-Not really I think we have added all we needed to in the last edition of “What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Fibromyalgia’. Except the current research and we probably wouldn’t have enough information to make another book.”

Question: What is the Most Severe case of Fibromyalgia you have ever treated?

Dr. Amand Answered: “A girl come into my office at 17years of age she was having epileptic seizures -going on almost all day, she was losing weight, we couldn’t do anything to treat her than so she went to neurologist and got on some anti-convulsion pills-to calm her down, then we were able to treat her. Now she is doing well, going to school and exercising.”

When Dr. Amand was asked about his reaction to the new FDA Approved drugs Lyrica and Cymbalta his response was:

“Pretty Bad- they can make you more tired and are pain suppressants. Some side effects are compulsive gambling, Erotica, lowering libido, and they block inhibitions. A patient was on the medication and slashed his arm 5 times than sat and watched TV. When his wife got home she asked him why he did it and he responded- ‘I just wondered what it would feel like’”

When asked what advice he had for patients suffering from Fibromyalgia he responded:

“ Do as much reading as you can”

  1. St. Amand has absolutely no proof whatsoever for his theories and his guaifenesin therapy has been shown not to be effective – in one of the most thoroughly completed studies ever done on fibromyalgia.

    • Then why do so many people say this protocol is a Godsend? I know one of them personally and plan to start it myself after the New Year. If it can give me even half of the results my co-worker has received, I will gladly kiss the Dr’s feet!! I am sooo sick of dealing with all of this and would give anything for some relief. I will keep you posted as to how much it helps me. But even if it only helps some, it is still better than nothing!!

    • The study they did on it was flawed, they did’nt realize how much salicylates block at the time, also they didn’t know
that some people need a higher dose. The other thing is
that you have increased pain at first, so some may have saw this as failure. I have gone through it and it works without question. I don’t know why you would post your comment unless you tried it, did it correctly, and it did not work for you.
If this is what happened then you probably don’t have fibromyalgia, you must have something else.

    • I am very sorry you have posted this comment. My 2 daughters and I have fibromyalgia and have been under treatment with Dr. St Amand for some years. Both of my daughters are nearly fibro-free and I am doing better and better. This is the only method that treats the illness instead of the symtoms and patients’ results can actually be followed by the mapping. If you think it doesn’t work, you probably did not follow the protocol correctly or have a lack of understanding of what fibromyalgia is. Did you follow the protocol with Dr. St. Amand or just on your own? Did you get mapped regularly to follow your progress? You need to try again with a fuller understanding. Please don’t discourage others from finding a path to wellness.

  2. I am on guai for 8 mths.Maija if you want study my case be my guest. I have fibro 30 years. No doctors in Europe or in Canada was able to help me. Yes I had bad time when I start guai but now I am 80 % improwed.I am prove it works and it work very well.I admire dr.St.Amand for his presistance and hard work.He is my hero.Thanks.

  3. It gives me such hope! I plan on starting the Guai protocol sometime in Jan or Feb. I’m just overwhelmed by trying to find all of the lists so I can make sure I eliminate everything. Any websites besides treatment center?

  4. To: Whom it may concern;
I’m writing this to ask the question- Since I was diagnosed with fibro, See I live in Niagara Falls, Canada- and see my fibromyalgia is bascially the way things are written in your book, however here I’m living in damp all 4 seasons, and the weather plays one of the most dramatic roles. The weather changes so frequently here my body can’t keep up. Maybe where you are it’s different, but I find I no the weather 24 hours in advance of a change in barometric pressure, telling me stormy rainy or nice, but that is the crazy part. Since my body is so wired if the weather changes midday to bad my body shutsdown and refuses everything nothing helps when it get’s to this point, if it clears up fairly quick, I can re-coup parts of some days like couple hour before bed. I get what your saying in the book “WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT FIBROMYALGIA”. Maybe in your part of the world Doctor, Not in mine- Study this one-You will re-vise Your Wonderful Book all over again.

  5. I have been on this protocol for 5 yrs. now. I had success!
My advanced stages were diagnosed by the saint himself, and he was right on the money. A year ago I was in another trauma situation that effected every portion of my life. I went off the protocol and reverted back to the hell I had worked so hard to relieve. I am proud to say that I am back on the protocol (4 months) and already feel much better. My key is to keep stressors at a low… Being my mother’s caregiver (Alzheimer’s) is super stressful. Meditation and carving out personal time is vital to your success. Use the website and don’t hesitate to call them for advise… They are wonderful! Also, they all are diagnosed with this disease, so they do understand what you are going through. Good blessings to your new adventure.

  6. I am a caregiver for a client who was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia several years ago. From what all I’ve read her s/sx’s mimic what others have experienced. I DID come across something that I’m curious about – how many people drink diet beverages or consume diet products with Aspartame/Acefulsame Potassium/Nutrasweet? I had been drinking about the equivalent of 1.5 to 2 2Lbottles of diet soda sweetened with Aspartame per day. This did not count any other diet products I would consume in addition to this in one day.At a certain point I began to experience blurry vision, confusion, loss of memory, loss of coordination, falling…My doctor had had no clue what was causing these symptoms and suggested administering a “Dementia” standardized test (however I’m only 64), but not to be deterred, I began analyzing what I was consuming that could be the culprit. It was Aspartame: I know because as soon as I stopped consuming it my symptoms disappeared. Recently, I began thinking about the amount of Diet Cola containing Aspartame my client consumes each day. It is nearly the equivalent to mine. I have searched several sites re Aspartame and came across one that mentioned “Fibromyalgia” and many other symptoms of Fibromyalgia as stemming from consuming Aspartame… As an aside issue, there is quite a lot of information about how Aspartame became approved by the FDA (political pressure and influence) when it shouldn’t have. Check it out! I’ve known about the situation for years but never gave it a second thought until I started with my client. Just a thought! I would be interested in hearing from anyone who might be/has been affected by these chemicals.

    • I am LK. I continue to work for my client who has Fibromyalgia. I’ve observed and learned several things. Per my last post I need to correct something: Aspartame was NOT approved by the FDA, but approved by “Executive Order” by Ronald Reagan after Donald Rumsfeld became the CEO of Searle Pharmaceuticals who developed this chemical. The FDA NEVER approved this; it was merely a cronyism political order.

After my client was limited to 2 diet sodas/day, ALL of her related symptoms have gone away. As long as she keeps to the plan she doesn’t fall, she isn’t confused, her eyesight is not affected, her speech is not slurred and her thinking is clear rather than “clouded”. P AY ATTENTION TO THIS AND LOOK UP REFERENCES ON THE INET!!

My client continues to overdose on carbs (ice cream, cake, candy bars) and the ONLY “nutritious” meals she infrequently asks for is scrambled eggs w/ cheese (not cheddar) and pimiento cheese sandwiches. She refuses to take vitamins but bolsters herself with the “supposed” fact that all her labs have come out “normal” (am not privy to this information).

Her eating habits cause her EXTREME fatigue to where she can sleep nearly the whole of my 8 hour shift. So be very careful about your intake of sweets and plan a decent diet with your doctor.

She claims she tried Guai, but it didn’t do anything for her.

Re Fibromyalgia, after reading, involves alot more than you might expect. It’s too “technical” to describe, but there are definitely molecular distortions that contribute if not cause directly Fibromyalgia. From my observations, ALOT has to do with your attitude. BE POSITIVE and know you can have control over this horrible disease too!

I don’t know if you have this problem but when I reflect back on my doctor visits I’m amazed at the lack of really trying to understand where you’re coming from, not to mention, NEVER EXPLAINING CLEARLY the treatment to be prescribed, the drugs to be prescribed, what to look for with his/her treatment, etc. ASK QUESTIONS – keep a list of whatever comes to mind and ASK your doctor about them. Obviously, a doctor can’t answer EVERY question but you’ll know which are most pressing. Do research on the Inet but don’t believe EVERYTHING you read. I try to stick with reputable sources like the Mayo Clinic, WebMd…So many people are afraid or embarrassed to question what a doctor says and passively takes the script in hand without even knowing ANYTHING about the drug (not to mention anything else). I’ve been in health care over twenty years and from my observations with clients and my own personal observations I feel VERY strongly about this. YOU are the customer; the “customer” is NEVER wrong to ask!!

      Take care!

      • Don’t trust the FDA at all. They didn’t “miss” the act of putting Aspartame on the market. They allow tons of deadly things out here for us to ingest… and they rule out very good, health-promoting things. Ugh.

  7. I started Dr. Amand’s program about 6 weeks ago and can feel a definite improvement. It is worth any effort required and I pray the good results will continue. I was afraid of becoming bedridden and now feel like I may get my life back. I am so glad I found his book and hope others do as well.
